The Company-first Approach

Given that the lack of an engaging company culture or diversity are some of the top reasons employees quit their jobs, it makes sense to think of company culture as a key area in your job search!

Simply applying for jobs from just any company can be stressful plus most companies use different titles for the same job position. For example a job for an HR Manager can be termed differently by different companies some call it Head of People others may call it HR Executive. Narrowing your search by company and making sure you use your networking savvy skills to get to know people who work there can help out a lot!

Quick tips to land that job in a company that offers a great culture and working environment for you:

  1. Make a list of all the companies you would like to work for and check what their values or mission are and whether that aligns with your own personal values/mission/purpose – this is VERY IMPORTANT
  2. Find them on Social Media to get a sneak-peek into their offices,events/activities and like or share interesting posts that you can mention when you land that interview!
  3. Get an “in” at the organisation you can send a simple message via @LinkedIn and even ask them to for go a coffee. check one of my previous posts this is whats known as an informational interview. Here is an example of an old message I sent:

“Hi Greta, I came across your profile on the Zalando LinkedIn Page and have read up on your company’s growth and success. I have worked in Human Resources but I want to be an IT/Tech Recruiter, hopefully at Zalando! Can we have a call or coffee? I would like to learn more from you!”

Guess what? She responded and even if you do not get responses sending to as many people as you can especially, by checking if they share mutual connections with you, helps. That “in” can then refer you to hiring managers when a relevant job vacancy that matches your profile comes up in that company

4. Keep track of any job adverts from those companies each week!

5. Build and leverage on your network- maybe people you know have some information or know someone who works at the company you are interested in.

6. Have a win-win mentality think of what you are bringing to the table for the company and emphasize on that in your interviews.

7. Keep your online presence and LinkedIn activity buzzing share or post information that interests you in line with the job or company you want to work for. Remember recruiters will check your online presence!

So get going and who knows before you know it you will be like this guy celebrating that you landed that dream job! Do not forget to thank your “in” if their referral helped you out!
